The grades are in...

Theo's first 4-year-old-kindergarden report card came home in his backpack this week. The students' performance levels are assessed using a number system: 3 means all of the time, 2 means some of the time, and 1 means not yet.

Our big boy brought home mostly threes for skills such as:
reciting the alphabet in sequence
recognizing his own written name
naming letters
communicating in sentences
appropriately expressing wants and needs
listening and attending to stories
printing his first name
using left to write progression in writing
participating in art and p.e. activities
understanding positional words
recognizing and reproducing patterns
counting accurately and understanding measurements
matching numerals to sets
playing cooperatively
participating in prayer experiences
accepting and responding to adult authority
displaying self control
accepting correction and displaying a positive attitude

He landed twos in the following areas:
listening for sounds at the beginning of words
speaking with appropriate volume (really?!)
listening without interrupting (shocker!)
participating in musical activities
seeks help when needed

Lastly, 1 one:
holds and uses pencils and scissors correctly
(We knew about this one. And we've been working on it. It seems his fine motor skills are still developing and prefers to hold his pencil as I would imagine a caveman held his writing stick and his scissors the way his Papa holds the hedge trimmer. He manages to get the job done, either way. But we still have some work to do to get it correct.)

His teachers wrote:

Theo has blossomed this semester. He is increasingly focused and attentive during our classroom discussions. Theo works so hard on holding his pencil and scissors correctly, but sometimes needs reminders to fix his fingers while writing and cutting. We will continue to work with him on his fine motor skills. We are very pleased with Theo's academic performance. He is becoming more and more confident every single day. Theo is always kind and patient, and a joy to have in our classroom.
I am so proud of my baby and a little in awe of the fact that in just 3 months he will be 5 years old. Full day kindergarden in just 7 short months.

Is this mama ready?!

That is impressive for a four-year-old! I taught Kindergarten for many years and one of the best programs to help students with fine motor skills is "Handwriting Without Tears". You can find the books at Amazon.

Way to go Theo! You should be one proud mama!

I do love the mental image of the holding of the sissors like papa holds the hedge trimmers. :)

Awww. I loved seeing this. So cute and fun for you! :) Good job Theo! Don't worry about the pencil thing. You'll get there, and i KNOW you can use that mac lap top probably better than any of your teachers. :)

That is so awesome. You have a bright boy! I laughed when you said he held his pencil like a caveman held his writing stick.

"Always kind and patient" which translates into a wonderful boy you are raising!

He's obviously a genius. The scissors and pencil issues just confirm it, as well as the fact that he has issues with speaking with appropriate volume. Lookout world!

seriously, wasn't he just a baby? i had to giggle about the "appropriate volume" for speaking. i got a report for ella that said something about her being a good eater. ha!

Go Theo!! I laughed when I read the part about "volume" - spencer likes to scream and then go "shhhh" and then scream again and then "shhh" ... oh boy.
